FOURTH BOMB…DSP Zahari Mohammed (right) with his men looking at the bombKENINGAU: The discovery of the fourth World War II bomb near Kg Toboh Baru in less than two weeks is causing fear among the residents.
District police chief DSP Zahari Mohammed said that he understood the fears of the people.
“We will do whatever we can to ensure that everyone will be safe,” he said.
He also said that he would agree to the wishes of the people to have the area scanned for bombs or even getting satellite images.
“On our part, we will do whatever is possible to dispose off the bombs,” he said when met at the scene where the bomb was unearthed at 11.30am yesterday.
The bomb, which has an 800-metre radius reach on explosion, is identified as UXO Bomb, similar to the earlier finds.
The area was heavily bombarded during the war as it was the logistical stronghold of the imperial Japanese army.
The 250lb relic measures two-feet and eight-inch in diameter and four-feet by seven inches in length.
The find was made by a worker who was clearing the area for development.
Yesterday’s find was about 20 metres away from the third bomb which was found about a week ago.
All the first three bombs were destroyed by the police bomb disposal unit.
Liawan assemblyman Datuk Sairin Karno said the fear of the people were real, as all the bombs that were found had not been diffused.
“The authorities must ensure the safety of the people first,” he said adding that the location of the finds was near the district hospital.
The area has been sealed off to public as the bomb squad was working on detonating the bomb.
